What You Need to Know About Your Scheduled Surgical Procedure at Andover Surgery Center

You should plan to arrive an hour before your scheduled procedure time for preparation and processing. Please remember to bring your insurance identification card with you and read the instructions below before your surgery.

Before Your Surgery

  • Do not eat or drink anything including water after midnight the day before your surgery unless your doctor otherwise instructs you.

  • Arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you to the surgery center and drive you home after your procedure. Even if you travel by taxi, you still must have an adult accompanying you both to and from the center. If no one is available to come with you, you must reschedule your surgery.

  • Females of childbearing age should inform their doctor and a nurse at the center of any possibility of pregnancy.

  • Ask your doctor for instructions regarding any medications that you may be taking. You may need to stop taking certain medications before surgery.

  • Your doctor should be notified if there is any change in your physical condition such as a cold, fever or infection prior to your operation.

The Day of Surgery

  • Please bring a list of the medications and dosages you usually take to the reception desk at the center.
  • If you are scheduled for anesthesia, an anesthesiologist will examine you and ask you questions about your health and medical history.
  • Please bathe or shower before your appointment. Do not wear makeup or jewelry. Please leave valuables at home.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that can be folded for storage.
  • You may want to bring a pillow for your comfort during the ride home.

When You Go Home

  • Rest!
  • A responsible adult should remain with you for 24 hours. Your physician should be telephoned immediately if severe dizziness or other alarming symptoms should occur.
  • Drink fluids and eat lightly for 24 hours.
  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages, operate machinery or drive a motor vehicle.
  • Take only medications that have been prescribed by or discussed with your doctor.
  • If you have any problems or questions concerning your surgery, please call your physician.

Children’s Surgery

  • Parents of minor patients are required to remain in the facility.
  • One parent may stay with the child – when awake – in the recovery unit.
  • Your child may bring a favorite toy from home.
  • If your child is under six, please arrange for another adult to be with you as it may be unsafe to drive and care for a child who has just had surgery.
