Holy Family Hospital today announced that it is opening a Farmers Market in Methuen beginning Friday, July 11th at the hospital’s Gazebo Courtyard. Market hours are 11 am through 5 pm every Friday through the end of October, rain or shine.
The market is proudly brought to the community by Holy Family Hospital in collaboration with the City of Methuen Mayor Stephen Zanni’s Office, the City of Methuen Office of Community Development and Groundwork Lawrence, the coordinating agency.
EBT/SNAP/Food Stamps, WIC, Senior Coupons, Groundwork Lawrence’s Matching Dollars, Cash, Debit and Credit are all accepted. Free parking is available and the MVRTA bus route #36 to Holy Family Hospital will also stop at the Farmer’s Market.
Holy Family Hospital’s Farmers Market Vouchers are also accepted. Steward Health Care partnered with the Massachusetts Farmers Market Association to create this voucher program to help manage diabetes and other chronic illnesses through healthy eating. Participating Steward Health Care physicians recommend patients for the program and once qualified, they receive vouchers valued at one dollar per day, per household member. The vouchers can be redeemed at any farmers market in Massachusetts through October.
“This Farmers Market is a wonderful extension of Holy Family Hospital’s robust Community Benefits program which proactively aims to address the prevalence of chronic diseases and conditions such as diabetes,” said Lester Schindel, President of Holy Family Hospital. “Local access to fresh produce is an important factor in someone’s ability to manage their nutrition and health. We are pleased to bring this market to the community and are very grateful for the collaborative support of Mayor Zanni and his office, Methuen’s Office of Community Development and Groundwork Lawrence for making this project a reality. We are pleased to offer this to the community and look forward to enjoying the market with everyone.”
“Farmers markets are a great way for our residents to gain access to fresh, local produce. The market at Holy Family will help encourage a more nutritious lifestyle as well as provide a great community space for our residents to gather and connect with each other. This is such an added benefit to our community and I am thankful to Holy Family for taking the lead on this initiative,” said Mayor Zanni.
Participating farms include Stasinos Farm (Chris’ Farm Stand) in Haverhill, Riverdale Farm in Groton and Lawrence High School’s Agricultural Program. A variety of fresh, seasonally grown produce will be available including fruits, vegetables and herbs.
“We are excited to partner with Holy Family Hospital and the City on bringing a farmers market to Methuen, thereby enabling residents to make healthy food choices for themselves and their families,” said Heather McMann, Executive Director. “We do this work because we know that food that's grown close to home is better for you, better for your community, and better for the environment. Together we are improving public health by decreasing the rate of diet-related preventable disease and making Methuen a healthier place to live and work.”
A storyteller will provide entertainment for children each week under the hospital Gazebo from 11 to Noon. S&C Exchange Peruvian artist Leonore Sanchez of Methuen will offer handmade crafts and jewelry.
