Merrimack Valley Hospital is pleased to announce it will open an Occupational Health and International Travelers’ Clinic on the hospital campus in January.

The Occupational Health Clinic will offer area employers injury prevention services, treatment regimens and health management benefits designed to enhance employee wellness. The goal is to keep employees healthy and safe in the workplace.

The international travelers’ clinic will provide pre-travel evaluations, counseling and immunizations for those who plan to be traveling for business or pleasure.

The clinic will be overseen by Medical Director Robert Voight, MD, who is also medical director of the Occupational Health and International Travelers’ Clinic at Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer, MA.

Dr. Voight is board certified in Internal Medicine and Occupational Medicine, and has been awarded the Certificate of Knowledge in Travel Medicine by the International Society of Traveler Medicine.

The Occupational Health Clinic
Occupational Health Services works exclusively with employers to help manage workplace health and safety issues.

Under the direction Dr. Voight,  the team of occupational health nurses, helps businesses and municipalities decrease their costs for worker's compensation by managing and ensuring workplace safety and injury prevention.

The clinic offers physical exams for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) including those for commercial airline pilots. It also offers Department of Transportation (DOT) exams, pre-employment and municipal exams, and fitness-for-duty and return-to-work physical exams. The staff will work to develop customized physical examinations, including visual, audio, strength, and flexibility testing as well as cardiology, laboratory, and radiology services, as needed.

The International Travelers’ Clinic
The specialty of travel medicine was developed to prepare and protect the increasing number of people who travel, for business or pleasure, to international destinations that are still considered biological risks.

Pre-travel medical evaluations can include care for routine corporate travel, care for long-term travel, general and destination-specific immunizations, and education about diseases ranging from common travelers’ diarrhea to serious illnesses such as avian flu, dengue fever and malaria.

Over one million people continue to lose their lives to malaria each year, but to protect against that disease, for example, there is no immunization - a traveler must take pills before, during and after a trip to an area where malaria is prevalent. This is how Dr. Voight, an expert in the field of travel medicine, can help protect travelers from infectious disease.

Immunizations available in the Merrimack Valley Hospital International Travelers’ Clinic:

• Chicken pox
•Hepatitis A & B
• Influenza
•Japanese encephalitis
• Measles, mumps and rubella
•Meningitis (Meningococcal)
•Rabies (preventive rabies series)
•Yellow fever

The clinic will also provide routine vaccinations to patients as long as they have a prescription from their primary care physician. Vaccinations include MMR, Varicella, Pneumovax, Zostervax, Guardasil, Meningitis, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Flu, Japanese Encephalitis, Polio, Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Rabies, Td and Tdap, as well as TB testing (by prescription as well) with either the mantoux test or the T-Spot.

The clinic will be within Merrimack Valley Hospital on the second floor in Suites 217 and 219. The clinic will initially be open on Wednesday afternoons from 1-4 p.m. and increase hours as needed.
